Want something unique to fill in that wall space you've been meaning to decorate for years? Well this is your lucky find!
Our handmade metal art is expertly crafted out of recycled oil drums from Haiti. Each piece is pounded out and expertly stenciled by Artisans like Brenord and Luckman shown in the photos.
These men are a part of a small Artisan Village which was once a booming tourist attraction. Sadly, due to the decline of tourism in Haiti over the past two years businesses like these are struggling to stay afloat. Your purchase helps ensure that the Haitian tradition of metal art stays alive and well! It also enables these artists to feed their families and pay for their babies to go to school!
A portion of the proceeds of this purchase support www.atthetablefoundation.org, a 501c3 non profit who's mission is to end the global orphan crisis by providing families with clean water, education, food and job opportunities.
Please note that we do not accept returns. All sales are final.

What is Metal Art?Haitian Metal Art is a unique and beautiful art form that transforms 55-gallon steel oil drums into incredible pieces of art. It is imbedded in Haitian culture and was pioneered by Georges Liautaud in the 1950's when he began making crosses to honor the dead at cemeteries. This tradition has been passed down through generations and most Artisans can be found working in the village of Croix-des-Bouquets.How it's Made! The process of making each piece and is extremely labor intensive.First the top and bottom of the 55-gallon oil drum is cut, placed inside the drum, and set on fire to burn excess oil and paint. The cylinder is then cut down the center, laid flat, and pounded out into a thin sheet that is around 3'x6'.Next, the artist uses chalk and a stencil to plan out the design and uses a hammer and chisel to cut out the shape. The artist uses tools that look like railroad spikes to hammer out different patterns and create texture.Final step is polishing the metal with a wire brush and applying a clear varnish to give the piece a glossy finished look.

Care Instructions:If displayed outside these pieces will rust/ patina overtime. Some people enjoy this look but if you prefer to keep it in its original form simply spray each piece with WD-40 and let sit until dry. Another option is to spray your piece with a coat of clear spray-on enamel annually. You can also use a clear coat to fix any scratches from regular wear and tear. Should you discover any rust on your piece simply sand it with fine sandpaper or steel wool and then apply the spray clear enamel. Follow these simple steps and your piece will stand the test of time!
